Keijuro Ishibashi (Saisui)

Keijuro Ishibashi (Saisui) (1896 - 1993) was born in Fukuoka Prefecture. He earned doctorate degree from Hiroshima University. He studied calligraphy under Kennan Nishikawa and Tenrai Hidai. Ishibashi taught at Tokyo Fine Arts School (currently Tokyo University of the Arts) and Army Cadet School. He was a Professor at Niigata University and Professor Emeritus of Nishogakusha Univiersity.

Saisui Ishibashi as a Calligrapher

Ishibashi promoted the study of calligraphy based on classics. He also created “Shinwayo” style (incorporating both the Chinese characters and the Japanese Kana characters) He practiced and promoted copying Buddhist sutra and executed 8336 scrolls during his lifetime. His life was devoted to promoting and teaching the art of calligraphy as well as to execute it and explore its artistic domain.
